Curriculum

We take pride in planning and providing play-based learning activities that are exciting, fun and developmentally appropriate for children.

Our program plans are developed by using emergent curriculum that is supported by a document entitled Early Learning for Every Child Today: A Framework for Ontario Early Childhood settings. Emergent curriculum is a way of planning curriculum based on the child’s interests and passions as well as the Teacher’s. To plan an emergent curriculum requires observation, documentation, creative brainstorming and patience. It is often spontaneous and responsive to the immediate interests of a group of children. This process requires a great deal of flexibility and creativity on the part of the teacher. Teachers are not the “experts” who know all and teach the children, but rather co-explore alongside and observe and encourage their discoveries. Each topic may last a day, a week or a month or more as long as the children are still interested in pursuing the ideas.

Documentation

The preschool teachers document the progress of the children in individual portfolios throughout the time that they are enrolled in the program. These portfolios include things such as samples of art work, documentations involving pictures that demonstrate skills/concepts that they have learned, written observations and developmental screens. These portfolios are provided to the family when they leave the program.

“Read with Me” Program
This program focuses on family literacy. Each child in our program has the opportunity to take a book home for a couple of days. Related activities are provided for the child to enjoy at home with their family. Each month a new book is provided. We encourage families to take time to look at the pictures, read and talk about the story with their child. Be a good role model… share the love of books with your child!

Our Daily Routine Includes:

  • Free play – art, fine motor/table toys, sand/water, science/discovery, library, blocks, music/song, computer, math/manipulatives, play dough, writing/literacy, and dramatic play. These activities are often rotated.
  • Group times – circle time, story time, baking/cooking experiences and gross motor activities.
  • Meals – A nutritious lunch as well as mid-morning and mid-afternoon snacks are provided
  • Rest – A daily naptime is provided
  • Self Help Opportunities – bathroom routines, dressing for outdoor play

Our daily activities stimulate the development of physical, social, emotional, and cognitive skills as well as promote self-esteem.

Parent involvement is encouraged. Parents are welcome to visit or participate as able.
